Hello is Peter here a game from writerslife.org
and coming up today how to handle
editorial feedback sending your
manuscripts off to an editor can be
nerve-racking even though you may be
paying them for their services getting
feedback can be difficult when you've
spent so long trying to make your book
as good a bidding can be an editor's job
is to find mistakes not just regarding
spelling grammar and punctuation but
also with regards to how your story
works overall of course you are in
charge because you are paying so if you
pay an editor to review your book it's
up to you to direct them about what kind
of feedback you want just remember
however there having a professional
editor review your work before you send
it to agents and publishers makes a
massive difference in terms of your
chances of success if you choose to self
publish a professional editor can ensure
your book goes on sale being the best
version it can possibly be
so how can you prepare yourself for
editorial feedback and learn how to
handle it all professionally first don't
panic when you first look at the changes
and editors made there may be a lot of
them this may make you feel utterly
disheartened or completely outraged but
either way the key is not to freak out
there may be hundreds even thousands of
edits to your manuscript a lot of these
however will be minor amendments a comma
here a formatting change there
and are therefore nothing to worry about
additional edits may require more time
to look over and absorb but remember
edits don't mean your manuscript was
awful to start with many excellent books
need a considerable amount of editing
before they hit the shelves and is
something all writers must go through to
make their book amazing next be thorough
take your time to go through every edit
and consider whether you want to accept
it or reject it don't rush this at first
you may feel wounded by some of the
suggested changes and your natural
reaction may be to refuse them however
this might not be what is best for your
book so try to stay calm and be as
objective as you possibly can be saying
that you also don't have to accept every
suggestion an editor has made it's your
story after all just be sure you are
clear in your reasons for doing so and
make sure it's not just your ego getting
in the way next any questions if you
aren't sure why a particular edit hasn't
been made get in touch with your editor
for clarification doing so can help you
get a better understanding and insight
into their thinking which will reassure
you that they know what they are talking
about and have done an excellent job
next proofread wants more once you have
accepted or rejected the changes made by
your editor it's a good idea to have a
final read-through of your manuscript to
make sure everything is as it should be
so reading through one more time will
make doubly sure your - script is
perfect and ready to be shared with the
world and next celebrate working through
your edits and manuscripts is one of the
very last stages of finalizing your book
doing so takes time effort and a cool
head it's not easy to let someone else
get
hands on your work but once you've done
this you can celebrate your achievement
and don't forget if you're struggling to
write or finish your book our free
writer's toolkit can help with it you'll
learn how to overcome procrastination
get organized stay focused find time to
write and finally get your book
published to get access now while it's
still available simply go to

that's it for that be sure to give us a
thumbs up my name is Peter and I'll see
you again soon bye for now

Hi I'm Jodi from WritersLife.org and
today we'll be talking about expert
rules for writing fiction today we'll be
looking at advice given by the experts
Elmore Leonard says using adverbs is a
mortal sin never open a book with the
weather if it's only to create
atmosphere and not a character's
reaction to the weather you don't want
to go on too long the reader is apt to
leap ahead looking for people there are
exceptions if you happen to be Barry
Lopez who has more ways than an Eskimo
to describe ice and snow in his book
Arctic dreams you can do all the weather
recording you want avoid prologues they
can be annoying especially a prologue
following an introduction that comes
after a foreword but these are
ordinarily found in nonfiction a
prologue in a novel is back story and
you can drop it anywhere you want there
is a prologue in John Steinbeck sweet
Thursday but it's okay because a
character in the book makes the point of
what my rules are all about he says I
like a lot of talk in a book and I don't
like to have nobody tell me what the guy
that's talking looks like I want to
figure out what he looks like from the
way he talks
keep your exclamation points under
control you are allowed no more than two
or three per 100,000 words never use the
words suddenly or all hell broke loose
this rule doesn't require an explanation
I have noticed that writers who use
suddenly tend to exercise less control
in the application of exclamation points
don't go into great detail describing
places and things
unless you're Margaret Atwood and can
paint scenes with language you don't
want descriptions that bring in the
action the flow of the story to a
standstill try to leave out the part
that readers tend to skip think of what
you skip reading in a novel thick
paragraphs of prose you can see have too
many words in them Margaret Atwood says
hold the reader's attention this is
likely to work better if you can hold
your own but you don't know who the
reader is so it's like shooting fish
with a slingshot in the dark what
fascinates a will bore the pants off
be you most likely need a thesaurus a
rudimentary grammar book and a grip on
reality this latter means there's no
free lunch writing is work and it's also
a gamble you don't get a pension plan
other people can help you a bit but
essentially you're on your own nobody is
making you do this you chose it so don't
whine about it you can never read your
own book with the innocent anticipation
that comes with that first delicious
page of a new book because you wrote the
thing you've been backstage you've seen
how the rabbits were smuggled into the
Hat therefore ask a reading friend or
two to look at it before you give it to
anyone in the publishing business this
friend should not be someone with whom
you have a romantic relationship unless
you want to break up don't sit down in
the middle of the woods if you're lost
in the plot or blocked retrace your
steps to where you went wrong then take
the other road or change the person
change the tents change the opening page
Roddy Doyle says do be kind to yourself
fill pages as quickly as possible double
spaced or write on every second line
regard every new page as a small triumph
until you get to page 50 then calm down
and start worrying about the quality do
feel anxiety it's the job do give the
work a name as quickly as possible
own it and see it Dickens new Bleak
House was going to be called Bleak House
before he started writing it the rest
must have been easy do restrict your
browsing to only a few websites a day
don't go near the online bookies unless
it's research
Helen Dunmore says finish the day's
writing when you still want to continue
listen to what you have written a dud
rhythm in a passage of dialogue may show
that you don't yet understand the
characters well enough to write their
voices reread rewrites reread rewrites
if it still doesn't work throw it away
it's a nice feeling and you don't want
it to be cluttered with the corpses of
poems and stories which have everything
in them except the life they need
Esther Freud says a story needs rhythm
read it out loud to yourself if it
doesn't spin a bit of magic it's missing
something
editing is everything cut until you
can't cut No
or what is left often springs into life
find your best time of the day for
writing and writes
don't let anything else interfere
afterwards it won't matter to you that
the kitchen is a mess
don't wait for inspiration discipline is
the key trust your reader not everything
needs to be explained if you really know
something and breathe life into it
they'll know it to never forget even
your own rules are there to be broken

time writing or finishing your book

Hi guys it's Peter here again from
writers life and this time a
step-by-step guide to writing a proposal
the ability to write a fantastic book
proposal is an essential skill that
every writer should have so many writers
put all their time and energy to making
their manuscript as perfect as possible
but when it comes to sending it off
panitch when trying to put their
proposal together and this is where they
can really let themselves down the
ability to put together a document
explaining just why your book is worth
that particular editors attention who it
will appeal to a white is unique is so
important for many writers putting
together a proposal doesn't come
naturally however having the ability to
calmly and factually explain why their
manuscripts is worth reading is what
will make an agent or editor initially
sit up and take notice if your proposal
is dreadful they might not even bother
getting to your manuscript at all if you
can't write a decent proposal they may
assume that your book will be terrible
without even giving it a chance so how
do you write an excellent book proposal
here is a step by step guide first
present for your idea
make sure you can clearly and succinctly
explain your story you should be able to
do this in a paragraph or two make sure
you do this first and foremost and make
the plot sound as exciting and
intriguing as possible next make it
obvious you have done your research you
need to state your reasons why this
particular editor or agent would be a
good fit to take on your book make it
personal and show that you've taken the
time to write an individual proposal
for them next be clear about the genre
and your readership an editor will want
to be sure your book will sell and it's
your job to persuade them a proposal
gives you the opportunity to tell them
who is going to buy it and why next give
your USP every new book needs to bring
something different to the market
what makes your book special why is it
something different be genuine and
positive not boastful and back up with
facts where you can this is your chance
to be positive about your book it's not
the time to be self depreciated learn
how to write so you come across as
though you genuinely believe in your
book but don't make outlandish on
evidence claims about it either
talk about your skills and give it some
personality an agent or editor will want
to get an idea of what you are like too
so don't be afraid to let your
personality shine through and include
relevant details about your skills and
achievements to show them your what they
are looking for and next make sure
you're writing backs is up your proposal
needs to be well written and this will
indicate how good a writer you really
are so take the time to make sure your
proposal is clear and has no spelling or
grammatical errors which will make me
seem sloppy and unprofessional
from the outset your book proposal it's
not just a letter explaining why your
book is excellent it is your business
plan and it needs to prove to editors
and agents that you have a marketable
idea that will appeal to a mass audience
a publisher who takes on your work is
investing in it and you submit your
proposal of smart and direct and
appealing as possible to give your book
the best chance of being taken seriously
and don't forget if it's struggling to
write or finish your book our free
writers toolkit can help with it you'll
learn how to overcome procrastination
get organized stay focused and find
types are right and finally get your
book published to get access now while
it's still available simply go to

Hi guys his Peter here again from
WritersLife.org coming up today why you
should say no more often
most people are keen on saying yes all
the time but not a lot of people like to
say no the thing is you should be saying
no more often than you say yes the
reason you should be saying no is that
your time is valuable when you say yes
too often you're giving up your time
that could have been better used
elsewhere there's nothing wrong with
saying yes to things that are important
to you but you've also got to get your
priorities straight if you don't have
your priorities in order
you will waste your time you may not
think saying yesterday will affect you
but if you compound it over time you
will find out you haven't ended up at
the destination you intended and I don't
think you want to end up at a
destination that you never intended to
be at the only way to make sure that
that doesn't happen is if you say no
more often you need to remember that
this is your life you are not
responsible for anyone else besides
yourself don't be afraid to say no
people will respect you more for saying
no than saying yes all the time don't
become the person who says yes just
because they don't want to hurt the
other person's feelings the person won't
be offended and don't make up an excuse
when you say no tell them straight about
how you're feeling when you say no more
often you're creating boundaries in your
life by creating boundaries in your life
you're able to get more done when you
get more done during the day you get
closer to achieving your dreams because
your actions will compound you need to
create boundaries in your life if you
ever wish to become successful ask you
self if you're where you want to be if
the answer is no you need to say no more
in your life and don't forget if he's
struggling to write or finish your book
our three writers toolkit can help with
it you'll learn how to overcome
procrastination get organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get

Hi it's Peter here again from WritersLife.org
and today we ask the question

should you change your story for a
publishing deal let's face it there are
not many writers in the world who
wouldn't love a publishing deal
sure some of us might find the
self-publishing roots more rewarding
even more lucrative if we were to sign
with a traditional publisher the
majority of us however have a shared a
dream that's to find a traditional
publisher who is willing to take a punt
on a bus but one thing many of us don't
think about is what we would do is that
publisher wants it to take on our book
but wouldn't agree to do so without
making significant changes would we
blindly accept so glad they picked us
that we would let them do anything to
our precious manuscripts to see it in
print or would we bought the idea and
refused even for a considerable sum to
let anyone tamper with our sacred work
this is something every writer should
think about where is it that you would
draw the line how much would you be
willing to change if the price was right
would you never sell your soul just for
a publishing deal or just that sort of
thing not matter to you at all there are
the professionals after all and know
what sells so why not writers need to
ask themselves these questions first
what do I feel comfortable with don't
let a publisher push you into making
changes the
ADEs there's always room for negotiation
compromise at the same time it pays to
be flexible if you outright refuse to
make any changes to your story you'll
come across as difficult to work with
which which may make them wonder whether
doing a deal with you is the right move
after all next do I write for fame and
fortune or for something more
understanding what inspires you to write
in the first place will help you to come
to an easier decision when realizing
just how far you go and how many changes
you'd be willing to make if your
motivation is to write merely to see
your name in print and have people buy
your books and making changes may not
cause you to bat an eyelid if however
you're right because you have a
particular story you want to share with
the world
you might feel very protective of the
words that have created that story and
the specific message you want to get
across what I regret it is the next
question if you have a sneaking
suspicion that you'll end up regretting
it then it's probably a good idea to
stay true to yourself there is nothing
worse than feeling as though you've let
yourself down and damaged your
authenticity as a writer on the one hand
if your book is good enough to get a
positive response from publisher even if
they do want to make changes that's
something to be very excited about on
the other if you were to change your
story and get your book published then
you'll have a much more robust platform
from which to write another book and
this time may feel as if you have the
experience and backing of your fan base
to argue that your stories should remain
as they are at the end of the day this
is
a hugely personal choice and there
really is no right or wrong answer but
if something worth considering because
knowing your limits and understanding
how you feel about your story can only
prove beneficial in the long run and
don't forget if you struggling to write
or finish your book how free writers
toolkit can help with it you'll learn
how to overcome procrastination get
organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get
access now while it's still available
simply go to
that's it for now

Hello there its Peter here again from
WritersLife.org and coming up today does
money matter when we first starts a
write one of the thoughts up must go
round every writers headies how can I
make money from this that's not to say
that every writer is money driven but at
the same time whether you're writing a
novel and try to get it published or
have decided to pack in the day job and
set yourself up as a freelance writer
many of the decisions about how much
time you can dedicate to your writing
will revolve around the possibility of
being able to make a living from it
while it's true that there is money to
be made in writing particularly for
fiction writers often we have to make a
choice do we want to write or do we want
to have money writing takes up a lot of
time and while it's possible to fit your
writing in around a full-time job doing
so requires a tremendous amount of
dedication even then there are no
guaranteed rewards it's also important
to decide how important money truly is
to you for most writers being published
is their ultimate goal and many writers
assume that if they do get that
all-important yes from a publisher that
their money worries were simply drift
away and they'll be given a considerable
advance and can write about their
stories living a life of leisure
unfortunately for those looking few
reality soon kicks in advances aren't
likely to be enough to retire on and
when it comes to royalties often the
percentage taken from agents and
publishers is so high that the author
doesn't see a massive return from book
sales of course if your book is a huge
success you could end up extremely rich
but if you think about how many books
are out there and how many rich and
famous authors you can name the two
don't quite add up that's because the
majority of authors yes even published
authors aren't wealthy and in fact many
have to do other work alongside their
writing to make ends meet
writing costs money too it's also worth
remembering that writing is likely not
only to toss you in time but money too
even if you self publish which means you
can keep all or most of the money from
any book sales you're then solely
responsible for getting the book edited
to a publishable standard gets in your
book cover design and printing and
sending copies to any readers all of
which will take significant dollars of
his sale price
not to mention marketing costs actually
to get your book noticed in the first
place there are lots of ways other to
make a lucrative living from your
writing it might just be that selling
books isn't the one you should rely on
if you can land yourself a consistent
writing game this is a great way to pay
the bills while still allowing the
freedom and flexibility necessary to get
the novel written at the end of the day

Hello its Peter here again from
WritersLife.org and coming up today
practical writing tips you can actually
use there are so many different pieces
of advice when it comes to writing some
you'll find useful some you won't when
it comes to writing tips every writer is
different and not all pieces of advice
will be helpful to them or fit in with
what they are trying to say or do
sometimes the most practical and
straightforward advice is the best these
tips should resonate with all writers
give them food for thought and can apply
to any kind of writing so let's take a
look at them first
say something whatever kind of writing
you're into you need to have something
to say take a step back and think about
what your message is what your point is
what you're trying to get across what's
your confidence of that you'll have the
essence of your story or article and can
build everything else around that next
use short sentences and simple language
it's so tempting to show your readers
what an enormous brain you have and to
use all the big and smart words you know
to demonstrate them but it's important
to realize that's not the way to impress
your readers be inclusive keep things
simple the most intelligent writing will
be able to create an impression without
making their readers reach for the
dictionary and next get detailed be
specific and use detail to build a
picture in your readers mind the more
clever and arresting information you
include the more readers will feel they
know your characters and the world they
live in
next use the active voice we know you've
heard it all before but using the act
voice makes your writing more present
and readers have a better connection to
the words so try where you can to use
the active voice at all times and next
break up your text even in fiction
writing massive chunks of texts can make
a redesigned lays over if you're writing
a story breakup text into short
paragraphs and use dialogue articles can
be broken down into smaller chunks of
text and devices such as a bulleted
lists and fact boxes can help too next
don't overwrite good writing is where a
writer's ego stays out of it if you put
your readers first and thinking about
what they need to know and what will
give them a better more meaningful
understanding of what is going on you'll
find the instances where you over I will
really stand out stop rambling stop
trying to sound smart and merely say
what you are trying to say and next
become a brutal editor eliminate what
you don't need become eagle-eyed at
spotting mistakes read your work through
the eyes of a critical reader and
remember to keep that ego at bay these
tips will help make your writing sharper
more accessible and more readable so why
not try applying them to your writing
projects today ok don't forget if you're
struggling to write or to finish your
book our free writers toolkit can help
with it you'll find how to overcome
procrastination get organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get
access now when it's still available
thats it for now be sure to give us a thumbs

Hi I'm Jody from WritersLife.org and
today we'll be talking about outdoor
activities to boost your writing skills
now that the weather is warming up and
summers around the corner it's no fun
being stuck indoors while struggling to
get your work done writing offers
fantastic flexibility you are your own
boss can set your own hours and could
work in your pajamas without anyone
judging you however it can be easy to
get so into your writing that when you
look up it's 72 hours later and you
realize you haven't left the house or
spoken to another soul in days so
instead of spending all your time
writing hunched desperately over a
computer trying to make the words come
out why not get outside into the fresh
air and sunshine while still being
productive and creative at the same time
here are some great outdoor activities
you can do to boost your writing skills
people watching getting out and about
provides you with lots of people
watching opportunities find a sunny
bustling spot and observe all the people
from different walks of life who pass
you by watching the way people move how
they dress how they interact as well as
listening in on conversations can
provide you with loads of great material
for your characters and story country
walks immersing yourself in nature can
truly be inspiring while the weather is
favorable get out into the countryside
find some beautiful places to take a
stroll and remember to bring your
notebook with you so you can observe all
sights sounds and smells while you go
exercise getting outside moving around
is great for your physical and mental
health a brisk walk a jog an outdoor gym
playing a team sport outside whatever it
is if you get out there get fit burn off
some steam and de-stress
you are likely to return to your desk
feeling re-energized refreshed and in a
positive mindset this will help you be
more focused and productive when you get
back to work an open-top bus ride if
you've enjoyed your book in a particular
place what better way to familiarize
yourself with it than being a tourist
for a day grab a notebook and head on a
city tour in an open-top bus where you
can enjoy all the benefits
so being outside while getting
familiarized with all the most important
landmarks if you haven't set your story
in a particular place an open-top bus
provides a great spot to observe the
ever-changing landscape of a city
working outdoors the great thing about
having a laptop is that you can work
just about anywhere so next time the Sun
decides to make an appearance why not
grab yours and head to the nearest
outdoor cafe park or even your own back
garden to catch some rays while still
sticking to your work hours so next time
you're looking sadly at the bright
sunshine outside while feeling you need
to stay at your desk remember you can

Hi I'm Jody from WritersLife.org and
today we'll be talking about 10 mistakes
new fiction writers make for new writers
seeing errors or shortcomings in your
writing is a skill yet to be developed
and something many have a hard time
understanding as professional writers we
become so attached to our work seeing
our mistakes whether we are new to the
profession or not isn't something we
typically want to admit as a new fiction
writer you create story after story but
nothing seems to be connecting with
editors are you wondering why your short
stories keep coming back with polite
rejection letters it could be that one
of these 10 fatal errors is standing
between you and publication lack of
editing the best writers rewrite and
rewrite new writers tend to think that
editing merely means a brief
read-through for typos and spelling
errors that's the very last thing you do
the first draft of a short story is like
a lump of wood removing unnecessary
waffle sharpening up images and choosing
the exact word will reveal the beauty of
the grain dull writing too many new
writers don't give their imagination
full rein they seem afraid to look
beyond and beneath the surface their
characters and dull and leaves dull
lives above all fiction must intrigue
and entertain avoid stereotyped
characters and situations
why can't a rich businessman be kind and
compassionate - why are unemployed man
always lazy and sit around in their vest
swinging out of cans why can't one or
two learn Latin or take up the
line-dancing
too much irrelevant detail and short
fiction especially include information
only if it furthers the plot aids
characterization and provides a sense of
place and time too much background
information makes a story all tell and
no show don't go into detail about
characters if they have no significant
part to play in the fiction never give
bit-part players a name if all the
postman has to do is deliver an
all-important letter don't say he Stan
the postman whose wife nags him and has
they bad back after falling off his bike
in 1976 his function is just to be a
postman don't lead up to an event jump
in straight away drip feed vital
information subtly don't drop in heavy
and adjustable chunks of history or
description make an essential part of
the current action no attention to
language too many writers are so busy
telling a story they fail to choose
their words carefully enough all writers
should try to increase their vocabulary
not by using fancy words just for the
sake of it writing should always be
clear but by using intriguing language
and new ways wind doesn't only blow it
can rip roar strangle with be
imaginative it's not only what you say
but the way you say it
absence of imagery and reliance on
cliches too much fiction is flat because
it lacks vibrant images cliches and
metaphors that have been so overworked
they cease to mean anything in sound
limp and stale like as cold as ice as
black as coal don't say she sighed with
relief think of another way someone
might show relief match your imagery to
the story and character if your main
character is always rushing about use
the imagery related to speed send him to
the greyhound track to act out his
scenes or place them by a railway line
where Express trains Thunder paths if
your character is depressed then sent
her into tunnels underpasses cellars and
basements reinforce the prevailing mood
but avoid the obvious don't draw the
reader's attention to what you're doing
just do it no sense of place people are
not only the result of their genes but
they are shaped by their environments so
show the readers where your characters
live and work if it's the sprawling
suburbs then show us what does a
suburban Avenue sound and smell like how
does the light shine on it show us its
life a man delivering charity bags from
door to door really been standing by
gates if someone lives in a filthy hovel
behind the gasworks let's see here and
touch it too many writers let their
characters flow around in a vacuum don't
forget to engage all the senses most
writers describe how things look but how
does fear taste how does anger
smell what does beauty sound like be
adventurous no shape or structure all
fiction but especially the short story
works best when it concentrates on one
person in one situation that takes place
in a reasonably short space of time a
short story expresses a moment of change
and charts the journey through the
change and shows what happens at the far
ends begin the story as close as
possible to the moment of change don't
waffle on once the change and its
aftermath has happened don't allow
yourself to be sidetracked learn how to
pace the story when to give and when to
withhold information when and how to
create tension speed things up slow
things down this is done by carefully
choosing words not only for the sound
they make but for the length of
syllables writing is a craft as much as
an arts if a writer needs to introduce a
flashback it should be carefully
signposted in and out to avoid confusion
shifts in viewpoint should also be
carefully introduced poor dialogue
skills dialog in fiction isn't real but
it must sound real keep it sharp don't
allow your characters to make long
confessional speeches or engage in too
much cosy chit chat use it to provide
essential information and above all to
show character lack of technical
knowledge all writers should learn or
brush up their grammar by learning why
things are so the most common mistakes
such as confusion of it's and it's your
and your mark you as a beginner learn
the reasons behind the rules and you
can't possibly get it wrong only when
you know the rules inside and out can
you be brave enough to break them the
best way to learn how to do it is to
read as much published fiction as you
can if you read plenty by a variety of
authors you cannot possibly pick up
their style it will on the contrary help
develop your own our top tip when you
think your story is the best you can
make it put it aside and leave it for as
long as possible minimum one week then
read it out loud your errors will leap
up at you like snarling dogs now rewrite
it don't forget if you're having a hard
time writing or finishing your book

Hello there its peter here again from
WritersLife.org and today what are
publishers looking for getting published
is hard all writers know it yet so many
of us keep on trying to get our work
published we keep going through the long
drawn-out process of writing perfecting
and sending off her manuscripts we keep
writing synopsis and coverlets of
searching agents and editors to try and
find the best match and painfully
excruciating me sitting around I'm
waiting to hear any news we do all this
for the TV tiny one-in-a-million chance
that we might hear back from them and
that they might tell us they liked our
work and that they want to take it
forward it's a lot of effort for such a
small chance so how can we make it more
worth our while the truth is that we can
do everything right we can polish our
manuscripts to perfection we can write a
dazzling covering letter we can research
our audience and prove that there is a
readership out there but still we don't
get the response we are hoping for it
leaves us tearing our hair out staring
at our gradually thickening pile of
rejection letters and screaming what do
you want well we don't have a crystal
ball often it's because writers aren't
really honestly pay attention to or
accepting what it is that publishers
want that they see their work rejected
time and time again if we close our eyes
and ears to what they are asking we
naturally can't expect to get very far
so just what is it that publishers are
looking for they want to be dazzled by
your idea your story must be unique but
not so out there
it has no mass appeal it needs to be
mainstream enough that a lot of people
will buy or have a specific unique
audience that is hungry for it but also
needs to be strong enough to stand out
from the competition it needs to be on
trend or good enough to stand the test
of time they want the whole package
being great at writing books is no
longer enough publishers want someone
who they can rely on to get out there
and be a powerhouse of promotion - if
you are personable presentable and
passionate throughout your work you need
to make sure that comes across every
time you pitch authors can no longer
just let their work do the talking or
hide behind their stories they need to
be marketable as people - next they want
a business partner the more skills you
can bring to the table the better
publishers no longer want to take a punt
on a new author no matter how promising
they don't like risks they want to know
that by going into partnership with you
that you can produce resource and by
resource we mean book sales showing that
you have a significant social media
following they want marketing savvy that
you are passionate hard-working and
already have more books in the pipeline
this all helps publishers recognize you
as a safe bet your credentials and the
author platform will help them see this
if you can prove you already have a
creative and detailed promotional plan
and are willing to put the working this
can help you seem more appealing - so if
you want to land a traditional
publishing deal think about how you can
mold yourself and your work into these
things we've already mentioned these
days a writer needs to be so much more
than just a writer so if you can
prove you have the business know-how as
well as the skill go for it and don't
forget if he's struggling to write or
for this your book our free writers
toolkit can help with it you'll learn
how to overcome procrastination get
organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get

Hello there is Peter here again from a
WritersLife.org today the best places to
learn about writing when it comes to
writing there's always room to improve
even the most seasoned writers will
agree that there is still so much to
learn
getting better at writing is all about
being open to learning opportunities
never resting on your laurels and
continually experimenting and finding
new ways to create better more
intelligent more exciting pieces of
writing each time you start a new
project but how can you learn about
writing where are the best places to
find information and the most effective
ways to get better here are some of the
places you can try first writing notes
joining a writing room is a great way to
keep you motivated by being part of a
group you have an instant support system
you can test your ideas out on a
ready-made
group who will honestly critique your
work you can discuss any problems you're
having or hurdles you need to get over
and can learn from writers who have more
years in the game have had unique
experiences from the writing industry or
have a style of writing that's different
from yours next writing and retreats
writing retreats can be expensive but
are also a fantastic way to meet
like-minded people and to set aside some
serious quality writing time where you
can focus on your work make tremendous
advances and genuinely get to know
yourself as a writer writing retreats
perfectly constructed to enhance
creativity and guide the writer towards
a deeper understanding of themselves and
their works if it can't afford one why
not try setting boredom yourself next
writing courses writing courses come in
all shapes and sizes from online courses
local community courses right the way
through to university degrees on
subjects investing in a writing course
can be a good way of learning more of
the technical aspects of writing as well
as giving a person the freedom to
experiment with different techniques and
approach their writing from new
different manuals next online forums
there are thousands of online writes in
communities out there some are
networking or support groups others are
places where you can learn about writing
or even submit your work for critique by
fellow writers the Internet is an
invaluable resource when it comes to
your writing and education and it's
pretty much all free and available at
the click of a button to next books on
writing many writers find nothing quite
as satisfying as the feel of a books
pages between their fingers
there are countless books available out
there on how to write what to do to get
published what common mistakes to avoid
it's easy to find reviews from fellow
writers about the ones they found most
useful and if you're struggling with a
particular aspect of writing you can
search for a book which focuses on
helping you improve that particular area
next by reading and writing and learning
from mistakes above all however writers
learned about writing by writing
themselves reading books learning from
that old mistakes if you set aside time
to write as often as you were able to
look back on your work with a critical
eye except where you might have gone
wrong and read everything you can get
your hands on for inspiration you'll see
your writing improve and develop
effortlessly over time well some people
have more of a natural creative flair
than others writing is still a skill and
if writers want to improve they must
dedicate time to practicing learning and
developing their writing techniques how
do you make sure you keep learning and
improving when it comes to your writing
why not share your thoughts with us here
and don't forget if you're struggling to
write or finish your book all three
writers toolkit can help with it you'll
learn how to overcome procrastination
get organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get

Hello there is Peter here from WritersLife.org
coming up today the importance of
great timekeeping there are lots of
skills that you need to perfect as a
writer finding inspiration staying
motivated and learning about the craft
are just some of them being great at
timekeeping is another while it may seem
that being a great time keeper is
something only necessary for the office
workers of the world actually there is
so much more than just arriving at work
on time that a writer needs to think
about learning how to manage your time
appropriately will be seriously
beneficial when it comes to your writing
progress and here's why meeting and
deadlines if you are a freelance writer
you'll know all about the importance of
meeting and deadlines without doing so
you'll quickly lose clients and gain a
reputation for being unprofessional but
meeting deadlines also applies to
fiction writers - this could be anything
from competition deadlines deadlines
from your publisher or simply deadlines
you have set for yourself making sure
that you are organized enough to meet
these is so important to your writing
career next goal setting every writer
knows how important it is to second
goals whatever kind of writing project
you are working on by making sure that
you have targets and set timeframes
within which to achieve those goals is
so important
doing so will keep you motivated and
feeling as though you are moving forward
and making progress with your writing
without this it's so easy to make
excuses start procrastinating and
putting your writing on the back
burner until it eventually drops off
your to-do list altogether and next
making a time to write

Hello its Peter here again from writers
life today what to ask yourself if your
book isn't selling it's always
disheartening when you finally get your
self-published book up on Amazon only to
find the days weeks and months roll by
and you don't seem to be selling any
copies for many authors generating big
book sales is difficult and most may
only see that a few a month or even less
leave the shelves it's no surprise
therefore that after a while you start
to lose faith and wonder where it all
went wrong at this point it might be
time to ask yourself the following
questions and it's important to be
completely honest with your answers to
if you really want to boost your sales
and get to the bottom of why your book
might not be selling then you need to
make sure you're doing everything in
your power you can to help make that
happen first have you put your book up
at a reasonable price take a look at
what other self-published books in your
genre are selling for if your book is
too expensive then no one is going to
buy it
similarly don't sell yourself too short
if your book is suspiciously cheap
people might be led to believe it's not
worth reading either have you worked
really hard on your book description
your book description needs to
immediately capture your readers and
make them feel as though this is a book
they simply must read spend time
researching other people's descriptions
to see what you can take from them and
take your time in order to perfect it
get it just right next have you put your
book in the right category if your book
sits in a category that's actually not
right for it people who find it there
will be looking for something completely
different and therefore they'll be less
likely to buy it
think about your reader what genre are
they likely to go to to search for a
book like yours next have you had your
books cover professionally designed the
importance of having a professional book
cover design cannot be stressed enough
this is one thing that every writer
should be happy to shell out for without
one reader simply can't take your book
seriously and will assume the content is
as amateur as the cover a next have you
had your book professionally edited
paying for a professional editor is so
worth it if it means that your book is
grammatically correct and error-free if
it means you have to wait to publish
your book so be it your reputation is so
important have you done everything you
can to build positive reviews make sure
you are always pushing for new people to
read and review your book the more
genuine positive reviews you have the
more people are likely to buy it have
you made your book available as an
e-book having your book only available
as a paper bag is really selling
yourself short in order to make sure you
appeal to as wide an audience as
possible it's important to have your
book available in both formats
have you written more than one book the
more books you write the more shelf
space
you take up and therefore the easier it
is for readers to find you keep on
writing build up a collection and you'll
be seen as a more professional and
dedicated writer to have you markets
that your book in every way possible
let's be honest there's probably more we
could all do always trying to keep
marketing your book and try everything
you can think of to improve its
visibility if you answer yes to all
these questions then you're giving
yourself the very best chance possible
to be discovered by your target readers
and for them to enjoy and spread the
word about your book remember simply
adding your book to Amazon's website
isn't enough it's all about how much
time and effort you can dedicate to your
book that's what will most likely help
see a boost in your sales and make your
book a success and don't forget if
you're struggling to write or finish
your book our free writers toolkit can
help with it you'll learn how to
overcome procrastination get organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get

Hello it's Peter here again from writers
life and today questions every writer
should ask themselves whether you've
just started out writing or I've been
doing it for years it's good for every
writer to check in with themselves from
time to time understanding what drives
motivates you to write that will help
you keep on the right track and remain
focused and confident even when things
aren't going your way it will also give
you a clear idea of exactly what you are
writing for who you are writing for and
what will satisfy you regarding your
writing achievements so here are some
essential questions every writer should
take the time to ask themselves first
why do you write do you write to be
admired do you write to connect with
other people do you write because you
want to share your stories or so he can
force your opinions on others is your
writing a vanity project or because you
genuinely think you can help people with
what you are trying to get out there
next what are you hoping to change
writers usually write with some purpose
in mind the best stories leave people
feeling changed feeling different
affected by what they now know writers
often find that this is the kind of
writing that brings them the most
satisfaction too
so figure out just what it is you hope
to do and what kind of effects you wish
to have on your readers next what makes
you so special to be successful in the
writing world you need your unique
selling point USP what can you bring to
the table that others can't what can you
offer that's completely genuine and
find your own voice and find the words
that only you can express create worlds
just you know how to navigate set
yourself apart from others and you'll
stand out from the crowd
next what do you want it's so important
to have a focus a clear goal in mind
without one it's too easy to keep
putting your writing aside and letting
other things get in the way search deep
down within yourself and figure out what
it is you hope to achieve and once you
truly know that don't let anything stop
you asking these questions can be so
helpful and give writers the focus they
need to keep going sometimes just having
clarity and a firm grip on our purpose
can be so important and it's all too
easy to lose that in amongst writing
pressures self-doubt rejections and so
on so if you haven't already make sure
you ask yourself these questions and
take time to really think about how to
answer them as precisely and clearly as
you can doing so could reaffirm what you
thought you always do or even change
your perspective entirely so why not
give them a go and don't forget if
you're struggling to write or finish
your book or free writers toolkit can
help with it you'll learn how to
overcome procrastination get organized
stay focused
find time to write and finally get your
book published to get access to it now
while it's still available simply go to

Hello there is Peter here again from
WritersLife.org today how to get more
people to read your book marketing your
book is arguably one of the hardest
things an author has to do for many of
authors while they feel comfortable
writing their stories editing them and
finding the best way to publish them
when it comes to actually getting people
to read their books they come to a
grinding halt the good news is that
there's plenty you can do to promote
your book and find new readers some of
these take considerable time and effort
and you won't always get it right the
first time
some require budgets and others are
simpler though perhaps not quite as
effective so let's look at some of the
things you can try to encourage people
to read your book and for you to find
new readers first describe its well a
good book blurb is your chance to really
sell your books of people that stumble
across it and can make all the
difference between those who simply
carry on browsing and those who click to
buy learn how to make your book sound as
exciting and enticing as possible think
about what makes you decide to read a
book look at other book cover blurbs and
descriptions and gain some inspiration
from their next book clubs a good way of
getting your book more widely read is to
offer it to book clubs there are book
clubs everywhere all over the world some
are virtual and some are local groups
find them contact them and offer your
book for free you could even join in the
discussion or come along to local groups
to talk about it afterwards ask
participants who
to promote it on social media and so
word-of-mouth will start to spread and
next family and friends when you first
publish your book you're confident that
all your friends and family will
definitely buy it and write you glowing
reviews of course after all you've got
over 200 friends on Facebook you'll
practically be a best-seller one day
well unfortunately the reality is that
it is surprisingly often bafflingly
difficult to get them to do it be
persistent with your friends and family
and make sure you ask everyone it's
interesting to discover that those
friends who you haven't heard off from
maybe five years are delighted to read
your book getting your own sister to
read it however is like pulling teeth
next get it into libraries approach your
library and explain you are a local
author and ask if they would be willing
to take a copy or two of your book it
may not be the way to sell more books
but once you are in then it could lead
to many people over the years reading
your book you could leave some cards
promoting your book on the front desk if
you don't ask you don't get
next find your audience promoting your
book is all about finding the right
people to read it the importance of
figuring out who your audience is and
then appealing directly to them cannot
be underestimated take your time to
research your audience who are they
where are they how do they shop what
excites them what turns them on of
waters enough how much will they spend
on a book what time of day are they most
likely to buy a book are they impulsive
or cautious with their purchases do they
live a bargain
what is irresistible to them if you know
your audience inside out you'll find it
much easier to come up with creative way
of reaching them and next freebies let's
face it everyone loves a freebie and one
surefire way to get someone to read your
book is to give it to them for free do a
Goodreads giveaway and you'll be
surprised how many people enter gently
ask if the winners would write you a
review if they enjoyed it
if you've published your book through
Amazon you could offer it for free on
Kindle for a limited period of time if
you do you're likely to see a real boost
in sales which could lead to more people
buy your book even when the free period
has ended there are no miracles or
shortcuts when it comes to getting more
people to read your book and a
combination of persistence and
experimentation is best if you keep
persevering and trying new things
there's no reason why you should see the
sales of your book increase and don't
forget if it's struggling to write or
finish your book our free writers
toolkit can help with it you'll learn
how to overcome procrastination get
organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get

Hi I'm Jody from WritersLife.org and
today we'll be talking about how to feel
successful as a writer one of the most
significant problems many writers face
finding ways to feel successful writing
is not easy and the time energy and
effort we put into our writing has to
feel worth it otherwise what's the point
while initially success to a writer may
be something tangible and obvious such
as getting their novel published on a
day to day level we writers need to find
other ways to feel successful to feel as
though we are heading in the right
direction here are some tips to help you
feel like a successful writer write
every day writing each day will help
keep your focus and also make the
writing process so much easier by
writing each day you'll keep the
momentum going and feel as though you
are inching ever closer towards where
you want to be stick to your goals
writing is all about creating achievable
but manageable goals giving yourself
deadlines and then working hard to stick
to them by having these milestones in
place every time you reach one you'll
feel that sense of pride and delight
that comes with success which will spur
you on to keep achieving more keep
sending things off if being published is
your primary goal you need to send off
your work continuously otherwise no one
is ever going to see it be strategic and
do your research but always have
something in the pipeline
so you know that there is still a chance
that you might get the yes you are
hoping for keep learning writing is a
massive learning progress the more you
practice and the more open you are to
learning the more likely you will
improve if you know you are getting
better if you know you are perfecting
your craft you can't help but feel
successful because you are always
improving accept struggles and accept
criticism
nothing worth having comes easy when you
face obstacles in your writing journey
work hard to overcome them but don't
beat yourself up that they happened in
the first place
writing can feel like an uphill struggle
sometimes and you will undoubtedly
receive criticism and rejections that
set you back the sooner you get over the
and the better equipped you are handling
them the more successful you will feel
focus on the positives and never give up
when you're feeling down instead of
beating yourself up or doubting your
success as a writer try to stay positive
instead the more positive your mindset
the better you'll feel being down on
yourself isn't going to help you get to
where you want to be so hold your head
up high take pride in the fact that
you're following your dreams and know
that as long as you keep trying you are
a success by following these tips you
can find ways to feel satisfied and
confident and successful it's not all
about getting published or becoming
popular success can come from within

Hello there its Peter here again from
WritersLife.org and today 10 ways to get
motivated we all have times where we
just can't seem to get motivated feeling
deep motivated can have a devastating
impact on your work and can leave you in
a slump where you feel uninspired
stressed out and down on yourself this
can end up in a vicious cycle where the
more you beat yourself up and the less
time you spend writing and less
motivated you will feel here there are
10 ways to break that cycle and get back
on track first of all join a writing
group there is nothing like bouncing
your ideas around and getting feedback
from others to kickstart your writing
and a writing group is a perfect place
to do so joining a writing room can
provide you with invaluable support from
like-minded people who will help you
reach your writing goals next do some
exercise exercise can work wonders when
it comes to clearing your head giving
you energy and relieving stress so if
you're struggling to write why not close
that laptop and get out there into the
great outdoors get that heart pumping
breathe some fresh air and return
feeling energized and inspired next read
a book sometimes the best way to find
motivation is to seek you from others
reading brilliant books can help writers
remember how glorious a craft it is and
find new ideas for their own stories to
get them back in the writing game pronto
and next go to the cinema it's many a
writers dream to write a book that gets
turned into a major blockbuster so why
not take
to the movies to see how it's done
watching how the story plays out on film
can help inspire you to write a story
that you know would translate well this
way to next write a short story
sometimes writing a novel can feel too
overwhelming and that's what gets us
into a writing slump in the first place
so why not give yourself a break
and start small instead write a short
story and get the satisfaction of
completing something from start to
finish this then might make you feel
more ready to take on the next more
significant piece of work next have a
brainstorming session instead of staring
at a blank page desperately trying to
get the words to come out try some
writing exercises to loosen you up
instead a brainstorming session where
you just relax your mind and let all
your ideas come out can be a great way
to find some little gems that will
motivate you to get writing once more
next create a character questionnaire
getting to know your characters better
can be a great motivator so why not
create a character questionnaire and
interview them one by one to find those
hidden depths and layers you need to
make your characters stand out and next
get organized feeling cluttered and
disorganized could be a massive blocker
when it comes to creativity flowing so
organize your research write some
chapter outlines pull your ideas
together and make a plan with a time
frame in mind to doing this will make
you feel so much more on top of things
I'm ready to get started with a clear
head our next step is tidy up the same
goes for organizing your physical space
wherever you write should be clear and
clutter free
so before you try a write make sure you
do at idea
and clear out so you feel calm and ready
to get those words onto paper and next
have a writing day sometimes it can be
challenging to find the time to write a
writing day could help you get motivated
once more so why not set aside some time
where you can clear your schedule and
all you have to do is write then you can
make some serious headway and will feel
motivated and inspired once more these
ten ways to get motivated will help you
to keep the writing process fresh and
exciting maintain focus and reduce
procrastination so next time you feel as
though you need a bit of a motivational
boost why not give these methods but try
and don't forget if you're struggling to
write or finish your book our free
writers toolkit can help with it you'll
learn how to overcome procrastination
get organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get
access now while it's still available
