procrastination is something each of us
encounters in our life it doesn't matter
if you're old or you are young
procrastination can take your life
anyway it's something that's so subtle
yet can have a lasting impact on your
life you see some people can
procrastinate so much they forget to
live their life or chase after their
dreams and I don't want you to be
someone who looks up and your entire
life has gone by and I don't think you
want to be someone who lives with
regrets each day you wait you will
encounter procrastination do you tell
yourself just a few more minutes of
sleep if you're like most people you're
battling procrastination from the minute
you wake up it can be easy to give in to
the procrastinators mindset and go back
to bed for five or ten minutes or even
half an hour what you're doing is
telling yourself that your work isn't
important enough over time
this habit of sleeping past your alarm
clock can become habitual once it
becomes habitual it's easy to
procrastinate on everything else in your
life you'll want to sleep with your
alarm clock across the room as soon as
it goes off get up and turn it off from
there drink a glass of cold water go to
the bathroom brush your teeth you'll
find yourself slightly away from this
practice from there you will want to
start your morning routine your morning
routine may consist of meditation
journaling yoga and reading your total
routine should be no longer than maybe
two hours during the entire time of your
routine you will not want to use your
phone you want to be fully dedicated to
your routine once your routine is done
start your work for the day you'll want
to create a power list with the five
tasks you need to get do
for the day before you even check your
phone or email complete the first task
on your task list
this will set yourself up for the day if
you check your phone first thing in the
morning you'll already start your day
procrastinating the go-to kick
procrastination to the curb is starting
your day off strong and completing your
first task before the rest of the world
has woken up and don't forget if you're
struggling to write or finish your book

for writers to make money while still
having the flexibility to follow their
passions and embark on other writing
projects too it might be that a
freelance writing career appeals so you
can find time to work on that novel or
simply because you love to write and
know you'd enjoy being your own boss and
setting your own schedule
whatever the reason to start off on the
right track you need to be willing to
put the work in you have to accept that
everyone has got to start somewhere and
you can't expect to land big contracts
or get well paid right away here then
are some things you can do to kick-start
your freelance writing career first of
all write blog posts for free in the
beginning you may well have to do some
writing for free while this may seem
frustrating it is worthwhile having a
robust writing portfolio and links to
actual published work will help other
potential employers and take you
seriously now be able to check out your
writing style and trust that you can do
a good job next decide on your
speciality do you want to be a

niche or speciality the former is good
for those who enjoy all forms of writing
and of course the job opportunities will
be wider the latter means you can
develop your expertise in just one area
and become the go-to writer for that
sort of thing some areas you might want
to consider are writing web site copy
newsletters social media resumes
letters ghostwriting sales copy podcast
transcriptions features and editing make
sure you can set up a great website and
portfolio so you have somewhere to
direct potential employers to always ask
those who have worked for if you can
mention them on your site or if their be
happy to leave a review the more
positive feedback and the more
significant your portfolio the more
professional you'll look next know where
to look for work when first starting out
take a look at websites such as upwork
freelancer and Fiverr they are great
websites with loads of different job
postings for all kinds of writing jobs
it's also worth contacting bloggers
magazines and newspapers to see if you
can do any work for them if you know
your niche get in touch with relevant
companies and explain the services you
could offer them it's all about pushing
yourself rather than waiting for the
offers to come to you if you're serious

Hi I'm Jody from riders life's at work
and today we'll be talking about the
beginner's checklist to writing a novel
you think the opening to every novel is
different that perhaps there is no right
or wrong way to start we have all heard
the phrase begin at the beginning
but what exactly does that mean in fact
there are strategies you can employ when
starting your novel that will give it a
greater chance of success remember while
most people might not judge a book by
its cover if you haven't grabbed a
person's attention before the first
chapter is through you don't stand much
of a chance of them continuing the
opening of your book needs to be
powerful and exciting it needs to reveal
enough of the characters and their
stories to engage the reader and make
them want to find out more there are in
fact only four good ways you can start
your novel and almost every successful
book will fit into one of them pick one
of these approaches and you are far more
likely to keep your readers interested
the prologue opening your book with a
prologue is a clever way of engaging the
reader from the beginning you take the
reader to a time far earlier than the
present story and describe a scene that
reveals some of the background or a
standalone scene that intrigues the
reader and will have significance later
in the book a prologue helps establish
why things are the way they are it hints
that action later to come it can be used
to create suspense intrigue and delights
a prologue sets the tone for your novel
without necessarily having to bring any
of your main characters into it the
action opening another classic way to
start your novel is to open it with a
scene where your protagonist is in the
middle of some action action which is
relatives in the main story the action
doesn't have to be the helicopter
exploding in the sky but it needs to be
something which relates to the core of
the story whether it's your heroes daily
routine a fight which catalyst is the
breakdown of the relationship a car
crash anything where you see your
character doing something interesting
something which reveals a little about
them that will spark the readers
interest and keep them at reading on
starting in the middle a rather more
unusual approach is to start your novel
in the middle of the story
the lot has already happened and you
want to introduce your protagonist
having been already deeply affected by
these events and this might be the best
way to do it much of your story is then
told in Reverse explaining how things
came to be this opening can be very
effective if you write it well as
readers will immediately want to know
the how and why of it all and therefore
it will continue to read your book in
order to find out the frame device
another common way to begin your first
chapter is a tell a story within your
story an example of a frame device would
be a character in your story settling
down to read a book which then becomes
the main story this is a clever way of
coaxing the reader in as writing about
someone being interested and intrigued
by your story makes the actual reader
trust and it must be worth reading -
this device is also used to make huge
jumps in the story as you can have a
narrator summarize a long passage of
time in just a single sentence for
example it continued this way for years
taking time to consider how to approach
the first chapter of your book is so
important find the one that works best
for you and thanks strategically and you
will have a better chance of drawing
your reader in as well as bringing out
the best in your story - don't forget if

Hello its Peter here again from Writer's
life and today ways to boost confidence
in your writing ability having
confidence in your writing ability can
not only help improve your writing it
could dare we say even boost your chance
of getting published however perhaps
even more important than this it will
also make the whole writing process a
lot more enjoyable too so what are the
things writers can do to gain confidence
in their writing ability first of all
practice makes perfect the more you
write the better you'll get at it if you
write often it will start to come
naturally to you
we all know how difficult it is to try
and start writing again after you've
been a bit neglectful of it you feel
uncertain about everything and full of
doubt your ability to get it done well
the first bit is pretty hard the bits
where you have to force yourself to get
back into the habit of it if you
persevere it will become just that a
habit
writing is a skill and if you keep
practicing you will improve get better
feedback and more positive reviews and
you'll start to believe that you really
have got what it takes which is so much
better and more productive than
continually putting yourself down next
misery loves company let's face it
sometimes it's just really comforting to
know you are not alone when you need a
bit of a confidence boost
why not remind yourself of all the other
writers who got rejected who were told
they weren't good enough you can rest
assured that some of the most successful
and prolific writers of all time
suffered from self-doubt and rejection
but they kept going anyway and so should
you next fake it until you make it it
takes time to feel confidence in your
writing ability but the powers of
positive thinking can help get you there
much quicker the key is to keep telling
yourself and others that you are a
writer that you can be a success and
that you believe in your ability even if
you secretly don't if you keep doing
this you'll eventually convince yourself
being self-depreciating and not being
able to talk with confidence about your
work will end up being a self-fulfilling
prophecy if you the author can't stand
up and say my story is one worth reading
why would anyone else believe that it is
next reach for the stars goal setting is
important for any writer start with what
you want your ultimate dream whatever
that may be then work backwards figuring
out what you need to do to get there
break your workload down it's a
realistic and challenging yet achievable
goals give yourself deadlines and each
time you hit one your confidence will
soar next if you fall get right back in
that saddle rejection happens to
everyone and we all miss goals or
procrastinate or don't do our best work
and feel bad about it however whatever
happens you must persist keep submitting
your work keep seeking out new writing
opportunities keep finding ways to
exercise your creativity the more
chances you give yourself to be success
or the more likely you are to be so
unfortunately there are no quick fixes
and if you do suffer from a lack of
confidence in your writing ability it
may take time to start believing in
yourself however remember that beating
yourself up and being negative about
your writing won't get you anywhere so
it's well worth trying to boost your
confidence in your writing ability the
whole experience will be so much better
if you do and don't forget if you're
struggling to write or finish your book
our free writers toolkit can help with
it you'll learn how to overcome
procrastination get organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get

Hello there is Peter here again from
Writer's life and today ten quick ways to
make your writing better while it can be
satisfying sitting down for hours and
picking apart your novel sometimes you
don't have time for that the great thing
is that we don't have to spend huge
chunks of our time on our writing to
make it great for those who can only
grab a few minutes here and there there
are still ways to make your writing
better and get that satisfaction that
you've improved it each time you have a
spare moment so what are some of the
quick things you can do to make your
writing better let's take a look first
look for spelling mistakes spelling
mistakes make your writing seem
unprofessional and will immediately make
a publisher think you haven't bothered
to edit it well do a spellcheck of your
work but also look for mistakes where
the word might be correct but it's not
exactly what you mean
next do a grammar check even if you
intend to use a professional editing
service having your grammar and
punctuation as good as it can be before
you send this off will help make the
process smoother and leave you with a
better piece of work as a result if your
grammar isn't excellent you can download
a program such as grammarly which will
help to weed out grammatical mistakes
and next look for words you overuse we
all have our favorite words or phrases
and it's easy to overuse them in our
writing try to skim through your work
weed out those that you end
repeating and find alternatives to keep
your writing interesting and our next
tip take out adjectives and adverbs
while descriptive writing can conjure up
a clear picture in your readers
imagination too many descriptive words
can make writing seem overwritten look
for these at the end of dialog such as
he said lovingly or she said angrily and
next write in the present tense the
present tense gives much more immediacy
to your writing and draws the reader in
so try to rewrite instances where you've
used the past tense and change them to
the present our next step give your
character and unusual trades give your
character and interesting and a
arresting feature such as a lisp or a
limp or a strange scar or a tattoo
this makes them seem unique and
intriguing next read your dialogue aloud
reading dialog aloud will help you
decide whether it flows well and
reflects how someone would talk the next
ask a probing question when reading
through your work try to ask an
interesting question which could help
you find a new direction for the chapter
or storyline always think about your
characters motivations for doing things
and make sure their actions make sense
next tip break up long sentences long
sentences can be tiring to read so try
to break up any those are a bit of a
mouthful and our final tip is delete
anything that isn't needed keep asking
yourself is this necessary
does this drive the story forward if the
answer is no hit delete these ten quick
ways will improve your writing and can
be done bit by bit so even if you don't
have a lot of time to spare you can
still get that manuscript in great shape
before you know it
now don't forget our free writers
toolkit can help you if you're
struggling to write or finish your book
our free writers toolkit can help you
overcome procrastination get organized
stay focused find time to write and
finally get your book published to get

Hello its Peter here again from Writer's
life and today how to be happy healthy
and successful when you ask most people
what they want out of life they'll tell
you a combination of being happy healthy
and successful but what if you could
achieve all three of these things at
once it may seem impossible to most but
it's quite the contrary most people
aren't happy in life because they give
up on their dreams because they give up
on their dreams they decide to be

Hello its Peter here again from Writer's
life and today write what you love vs.
write what you know when it comes to
writing fiction the sky's the limit or
is it so many of us get confused by
writing advice and it's no wonder much
of it can be contradictory and to
understand which pieces of advice to
follow can be tricky this has never been
truer when it comes to the age all
advice of writing what you know writers
are often told that writing what we know
is the best way to write convincingly
reliably to ensure the reader believes
in us and our writing voice however the
arguments against this is well writing
what we know can feel a little dull the
problem with being taught to write what
you know is that many things you know
are just the things that you do on a
daily basis and the danger of writing
one of these things is that they neither
inspire or interest you nor do they
inspire or interest your readers great
stories are dramatic and action-packed
and while characters need to be
relatable and ordinary in some ways
their journeys are not so at the same
time if you completely ignore this
advice and only write what you think
might impress others or just to sell
books
you risk sounding vague and unconvincing
if you aren't passionate about your
writing that's going to come across no
matter how hard you try to disguise it
with big story lines and
larger-than-life characters besides
what's popular now might have had its
time in the spotlight by the time your
book is finished
and then you'll have waste
all that time and effort for nothing
often by taking the advice to write what
you love you do end up writing what you
know regardless it's just the very best
of what you know rather than the
day-to-day writing about what you love
is writing about what you are most
passionate about what fills you with
emotion and get you going you're
therefore be more enthused by your
writing projects and more likely to be
able to write it quicker and better as
well as feeling a far deeper sense of
accomplishment and satisfaction once you
completed writing what you love will
also make it easier for you after you've
finished your book if you need to
promote a marketing yourself if you
genuinely believe in it and are
passionate about sharing your writing
with the world you'll be more dedicated
to promotion and more likely to find
creative and effective ways to do so
your passion will naturally shine
through and potential readers will pick
up on this at the end of the day some
pieces of writing advice can be
beneficial while others can feel foreign
and unnatural to you and it's up to the
individual writer to decide which
writing pieces of advice work for them
nothing is set in stone that's the
beauty of writing and as long as you're
trying to improve to learn and are
continuing to write then you can't go
too far wrong and remember if it's
struggling to write or finish your book

Hello its Peter here again from Writer's
life and today could you write a
nonfiction book writing a nonfiction
book isn't for everyone many writers
don't even consider it as an option
however while writing a nonfiction book
is still difficult if you have an area
of knowledge and interest or passion
that could be shared with the world it
might be worth considering while the
book market is saturated and not
necessarily less competitive for those
writing nonfiction books if you could
find a particular niche with it you will
find a particular audience eager and
waiting to receive your work because of
this you may find the publishing
marketing and selling your nonfiction
book is somewhat more straightforward
than if you were to write a work of
fiction
that's not to say that writing a
nonfiction book is easy the same
principles apply and the more work you
do to prepare and map out your novel in
the beginning stages the more successful
you are likely to be so do you think you
could write a nonfiction book here are
some questions to ask yourself do you
have a unique style or tone that will
make your book engaging and appealing to
your readers what's the competition line
has it been done before non-fiction
books should be specific well researched
well thought-out engaging educating and
entertaining beat a biography of your
life a guide about the life behavior of
a special type of rare animal or a book
dedicated to sharing your passion for
clown puppets it doesn't matter how
niche or bizarre your topic is if you
know there are readers out there and
presents your material in a way that
will appeal to them you know you have
the basis to make your book a success if
you think you could write a nonfiction
book the writing process is much the
same as any other kind of book creating
an outline researching your material and
breaking your book down into chapters
will help you feel assured that your
book idea could work and help you to
stay focused and keep on track until
it's finished writing a nonfiction book
can be just as rewarding and satisfying
and creatively exciting as writing a
fiction book so if you have a weird of
wonderful hobby fascinating history or
in-depth knowledge of something unique
and beautiful why not share it with the
world and see if you can create a work
of nonfiction
that's a raving success and don't forget
if he's struggling to write or finish
your book our free writers toolkit can
help with it you'll learn how to
overcome procrastination get organized
stay focused
find time to write and finally get your
book published to get access now while

Hello again it's Peter here from Writer's
Life and today creating meaningful
writing goals when it comes to being a
productive writer creating goals will
help you stay focused and on track
however creating goals that will
actually help you achieve what you want
to achieve requires some thought and
planning it's easy to come up with a
list of aims or things you'd like to
accomplish in your writing but without
putting more effort into fleshing these
out it will be all too easy to ignore
them
so how can you create meaningful writing
goals and ensure that you stick to them
here are some helpful tips first have
deadlines one of the most important
things you can do when creating your
writing goals is to give each one a
deadline without a deadline there is no
time frame and the goal itself becomes
indefinite into endless be very careful
when giving yourself deadlines too far
in the future and you'll keep putting
the work off too close to the present
and it could send yourself into a panic
find it too difficult to stick to them
and then become disheartened with the
process or together and next break them
down when it comes to meaningful
goal-setting writing down the goal
itself simply isn't enough starts with a
big picture but then make sure your
goals have been broken down into
manageable bite-sized chores if you
don't do this the goal could seem too
overwhelming by giving yourself smaller
tasks you'll be able to note your
progress and feel so much better about
what you are achieving and next figure
out the how having massive life-changing
writing goals
such as getting ones book finished and
published are brilliant
however by not figuring out how you're
going to achieve this it's all too easy
to become stressed and worried about the
enormity of such a task to make your
goals meaningful you need to create a
plan of exactly how you're going to
achieve what you want to achieve this
will take some thoughts but doing so
means you are left with a clear set of
instructions for yourself and you'll
know exactly what you need to do to get
where you need to be and next be
realistic being realistic about your
goals is also essential as writers we
must face certain facts there are some
things that are simply out of our
control while having a dream of being an
international bestseller it's brilliant
we must accept that there is a huge
amount of competition out there and many
writers remain working away for years
and years before they see any kind of
success even then there are no
guarantees being realistic about what
you want to achieve and modifying your
goals so they are based on things you
know with hard work and effort you can
definitely reach will make the process
so much more satisfying and rewarding
when you get there and next be flexible
remember you might find during your
writing project where your goals change
make sure your goals are flexible and
take the time to review them regularly
to make sure they are in line with what
you actually want and you haven't
outgrown them if something is no longer
part of your plan
just change it remember your goals are
there to give you a sense of focus and
make you feel great when you have
achieved them they are your goals and no
one else's
so as long as you are happy with them
and working towards them that's all that
matters and don't forget if you're
struggling to write or finish your book

it you'll learn how to overcome
procrastination get organized

Hello its Peter here again from Writer's
life and today how to set a scene like a
pro when it comes to writing a book
setting the scene so it draws the reader
in and creates a platform for the action
that's about to unfold is so essential
all great writers need to learn how to
paint a picture how to create a setting
that appeals to the senses and allows
readers to become immersed in it as if
they were there themselves becoming a
master at scene setting takes time and
practice you are setting the scene from
a particular character's point of view
and the reader therefore sees it as they
would so considering that character's
personality use of language and the way
their mind works will influence which
details are shared with the reader what
they notice and how that makes them feel
seem setting is a great way to prepare
the reader for what's to come
for example the description may be one
big metaphor for how a character is
feeling or what action they decide to
take next authors do this often using
devices such as pathetic fallacy that is
projecting human feelings onto inanimate
objects to determine the mood to
indirectly demonstrate how a character
is feeling or letting the reader know
what's in store for them next the basics
of scene setting requires a writer to
think about the senses a well set C will
appeal to all five senses thus really
giving the reader an idea of what it is
like to be there every time you write a
new scene it's therefore a good idea to
think about the five senses and try to
include a disc
that appeals to all of them it's all too
easy just to describe what a character
sees and forget to mention what he or
she hears smells feels or tastes
creating a great scene is one of the
ways that you can demonstrate your own
stamp as a writer and really let your
unique writing voice comes through some
writers are known for their use of
poetic language for example others may
be celebrated for that smart descriptive
words or the way they are very
economical and sparse in their
descriptions yet managed to pick exactly
the right adjectives to precisely
conjure up powerful images in the
readers mind a scene should not only
appeal to the senses but also provoke an
emotional reaction in the reader writing
powerful descriptions can ignite an
emotional charge in your reader if you
are trying to get them to feel a
particular way or have a sense of what
the character is feeling then using the
scene to reflect this can make your
writing even more powerful and effective
at the end of the day becoming a master
at scene setting will significant Hance
your book and immediately make the
reader want to know more about what's
going on so make sure that next time you
sit down to write you pay attention and
take the time to set a brilliant scene
and let your story unfold from there and
don't forget if you're struggling to
write or finish your book our free

learn how to overcome procrastination
get organized

Hi I'm Jody from Writer's life at work
and today we'll be talking about writing
tips for aspiring writers writing is a
really wonderful activity personally I
really enjoy reading and writing
historical romance if you are an
aspiring writer here are some tips to
get you started the hook the opening of
your story should be a hook that catches
the reader and makes them want to read
on usually you would start with the
conflict or point of change in some
stories you can however show a bit of
the characters normal life before
introducing the problem or conflict that
changes the character's life the hero's
journey this type of story is known as
the hero's journey and requires skill to
write the main point is that your
writing should be deliberate and not a
coincidence
the first few paragraphs should make the
reader want to continue they should be
interesting and if there is any
background information in the first few
paragraphs it should be interspersed
with conflict large chunks of background
information or description will quickly
bore the reader and should be avoided
pick up a few books and read the first
few pages to see how other writers write
them there is even a chart you can
follow specifically called the hero's
journey google it and you'll see what
I'm talking about
introduce your conflict introduce the
problem or conflict in the first few
pages if we don't know from the
beginning what the conflict is we may
not want to read on after all it's the
conflict that keeps us reading conflicts
can be internal with the character
external between the character and the
outside world or both but we all know
the best type of conflict is internal
background information background
information should be kept at a minimum
and short stories while in novels bits
of background information should be
provided in various places large chunks
of background information at one place
however should be avoided dialogue
dialogue should sound natural but should
not be exactly like real-life
conversation read dialogue aloud to see
whether it sounds right or not dialogue
should also be consistent with the
character's personality if your
character seems to be a rogue from other
descriptions but the dialogue shows them
it to be extremely nice there should be
a reason to it does the character have
multiple faces are they only that way
certain people or have you used the
dialogue that's inconsistent with the
character's personality every scene in
your story it should move it forward or
show characterization but preferably
both no scenes should be there without a
purpose during the rewrite stage ask
yourself whether the scene further
supply or show his characterization what
would happen if you throw the scene out
well the story fall apart like a sweater
would if you cut out some yarn or will
the story remain complete without the
scene if the story is complete without
the scene did the scene show some
necessary information about the
character if not then it's unnecessary
and should not be included in the story

time writing or finishing your book

Hello its Peter here again from Writer's
life and today how to develop your
initial book idea there's nothing quite
like a feeling of coming up with a
brilliant idea for a new book it might
come to you in a flash when you are
relaxing or thinking about all the
things you might see or hear is
something that inspires you all you
might have added the idea at the back of
your mind for a long time
and feel now is the time to explore it
further however you happened upon your
initial book idea it can be an exciting
time when you get that first spa knowing
what to do with it next however can be a
little more tricky writing a novel is no
mean feat after all a while it can be
tempting just to jump right in and start
without researching and taking the time
to understand your story idea and
whether it can work you can end up in
trouble some writers like to simply
write and see where it takes them while
this can be freeing and productive most
writers find that they'd end up backing
themselves into a corner suddenly their
story runs out of steam all the plots
has gotten so complicated there's no
keeping track of what is going on or
they have backed themselves into a
corner and there is nowhere left to go
finding out that your story isn't going
to work when you've already invested
time and energy into it can be very
disheartening that's why it's a good
idea to take some steps to ensure you
can get from chapter 1 right through
until the end so how do you do this
first of all shape your idea once you
have your brilliant initial
idea don't stop there spend lots of time
bending and shaping it experimenting
with it and allowing it to grow think
about your characters motivations work
out how to add unique twists to your
plot push the limits of your imagination
by breaking from the mold one great idea
does not make a novel so make sure you
spend time adding to it and then
chipping away at it and then adding to
it again until your idea is something
much more sculpted and much more
powerful as a result next pay attention
to everyone and everything it's easy to
get too focused on your main characters
and too bogged down in the main plot
however a good book has minor characters
and subplots too and these should be
just as fierce and imaginative and
intriguing and fantastic as the rest of
your novel make sure it has depth and
layers and make sure you can tie
everything together at the end when
writing your first draft write about
everything include it's all pack your
story full of interesting characters and
places and things to make it burst from
the page next give it space to write a
book you need enough material to keep it
going if you find that you're struggling
to find enough to say or are trying too
hard
to fill out your chapters but soon find
your book will feel slow and lethargic
keep up the energy pick up the pace and
if parts of your plot feels slow work
out how to add drama to amp them up and
drive them forward so you're right a
real page-turner next get rid of the
excess once you've written your first
draft you can now start to strip it back
get rid of everything that isn't
sorry even if it's brilliantly written
you'll know when something has no place
being in your book and even though it
may hurt to take it out it's the only
way to make sure your story is truly
great by implementing these techniques
you'll take your story from its initial
idea to something far more exciting
something tangible well developed and
ultimately something that you can be
truly proud of developing your book
ideas takes focus but doing so and
allowing oneself the time to truly
explore the creative process will mean
that your book will be all the better
and no doubt your readers will think so
too and don't forget if it's struggling
to write or finish your book our free
